I am a very big fan of Taylor Swift’s most recent album, folklore! So I was naturally very excited when Ilsa @ A Whisper of Ink (who is amazing) made a book tag based on the album, and of course I then became very busy with schoolwork and other activities and did not have time to actually write this post until now.
Anyway, I am very excited about this!! Hopefully you are too 🙂
And if you haven’t listened to folklore, 1) you will still be able to hear about books I like in this post, and 2) you should definitely listen to it.

a book with an ending that let you speechless
This is probably my favorite song from the album! I’m gonna go with I’ll Give You the Sun for this one. I remember finishing it and just sitting still for a while because I had to process just how amazing this book is—this happened a while ago, but I was recently reminded of it when one of my friends read it on my recommendation, which made me very happy 😉
a book that makes you feel happy and sad all at once
Love, Creekwood is definitely perfect for this prompt, because reuniting with the Creekwood characters made me so ridiculously happy, but it was also SO short, which was very sad. If Becky Albertalli just kept writing books about these kids for the rest of time, I would read all of them.
the last great american dynasty
a book with a fascinating and extremely well-told story
Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing is the perfect book for this—it’s an amazingly well-told story that follows the same family for generations. Highly highly recommend!
a book you wish you hadn’t read
Let the Sky Fall was so disappointing because the author’s middle grade books are some of my absolute favorites, but I couldn’t stand this YA book unfortunately. I’ve blocked a lot of it out, but I remember just feeling like it was not well-written and I was picking up on some strange gender dynamics? Anyway, that was a bummer and it kinda tainted this author for me, but I’m still very much a fan of the Keeper of the Lost Cities series.
(I guess it’s kinda weird to put buy links for this one since I wouldn’t recommend it, but like…here they are just in case, I guess)
my tears ricochet
a book that made you cry uncontrollably
I feel like I say this every time I talk about books that made me cry but A Thousand Perfect Notes all the way. It takes a lot for a book to make me ugly sob, but this book did it.
a book that feels like it was written just for you
I can’t explain this one. I honestly couldn’t even give you a summary of what This Adventure Ends is about (and I only read it a year and a half ago), but it just has such a vivid association for me with overwhelming emotions, like both happy ones and gut-wrenching ones?? Idk, I’m doing a terrible job of explaining this, but bottom line: I thought this was a very good book.
a childhood book that makes you feel nostalgic
Ok, there are so many I could choose for this, but I’m gonna go with the Magic Tree House series because those books were the bomb in kindergarten, and because I was just talking about them with the aforementioned friend who recently read I’ll Give You the Sun. (Maia, if you’re reading this: I am a big fan of our book discussions, hehe.) Not only is Magic Tree House a wonderful series, I also share a name with one of the main characters 🙂
a book that reminds you of summer
Love & Gelato is the quintessential summer YA. Wanderlust (Italy!), romance, etc. Sure, it’s not a five-star favorite (at least for me), but it’s a solid summer read.
this is me trying
a book that deals with loneliness & sadness
I’ll Give You the Sun (and I think This Adventure Ends) could also work for this prompt, but in the spirit of not reusing books, I’ll go with The Catcher in the Rye, another great read. My ninth grade class was pretty divided about this one, but I really felt for Holden and ending up liking it.
a book that gave you a book hangover
The Sky is Everywhere!! Jandy Nelson’s debut (Can you tell I’m a big fan?) is really atmospheric, and I remember just ~staring out the window into the night~ for a while when I reached the end of it.
a book that came into your life at the exact right time
I was kinda stressed when I discovered the Heartstopper webcomic on tumblr, and let me tell you, this is the PERFECT comfort book. It deals with some serious topics, but it still manages to be so soft and wholesome and happiness-inducing.
a book with a female character you adore
As much as I love Lara Jean, it’s the side characters Kitty and Chris who really steal the show in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy, in my opinion 😉
a book that is haunting
Foul is Fair, definitely. I’ve never been so creeped out and satisfied at the same time by a single book, but I guess girls murdering abusers will do that. This is super well-written, and it retells Macbeth in such a clever way.
a book couple that fills you with yearning
Percy and Annabeth from the Percy Jackson series are the ultimate couple goals!! (Also I love this song omg.) The underwater kiss, the nicknames…this is making me want to reread. And I am so excited to see them onscreen when the TV adaptation is made!
a book character you’d die for because you love them so much!
Such an underrated song! I think I’ll go with Bram from Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda for this one because watching Love, Victor earlier in quarantine reminded me how much of a sweetheart he is. I love him!!
a book you thought you were going to love but didn’t
I hate to end with this one, but…while I was expecting to enjoy Romeo and Juliet since it’s so iconic, I did not, unfortunately. Undeveloped insta-love, weird age gaps, just general stupidity…I don’t really get the hype. I did, however, enjoy the Baz Luhrmann movie.
Tell me what your favorite folklore song is! Or place bets on when you think I’ll receive the record I ordered in July and have not yet obtained! (It said I would get it in 16 weeks, so if that’s right I have two weeks to go.)
