My Favorite Audiobooks (+I Need More Recs??)

Happy Tuesday booknerds! I’m currently on spring break, which has me feeling very relieved.

Today’s topic for Top Ten Tuesday is audiobooks, so I’m going to be sharing a few of my favorite audiobooks and some general thoughts on the subject!

My Audiobook Recs

🎧 Asking For It written Louise O’Neill, narrated by Aoife McMahon

This audiobook was absolutely stunning. The story is so raw and painful, and the narration portrayed this so well. (Read my review here.)

🎧 Harry Potter (series) written J.K. Rowling, narrated by Jim Dale

Jim Dale’s voice is like sinking into a soft couch next to a fireplace after coming inside on a snowy evening. It may have to do with the nostalgia of the Harry Potter series, or the fact that my little brother goes through periods when he falls asleep listening to these audiobooks every night, but they’re just so comforting.

🎧 The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo written by Taylor Jenkins Reid, narrated by Alma Cuervo, Julia Whelan, and Robin Miles

This is the only audiobook I’ve listened to so far this year, and it’s also one of my favorite books of this year. I don’t know exactly what it was about the narration specifically that drew me in so much, but I loved listening to this.

🎧 The Poet X written and narrated by Elizabeth Acevedo

Okay so The Poet X is a novel in verse and the author is an actual spoken word poet, so obviously this audiobook was totally amazing. Elizabeth Acevedo’s voice brought the story to life so perfectly, and though I’m sure I still would’ve enjoyed reading this book in print form, I feel like I definitely wouldn’t have enjoyed it quite as much.

🎧 The Penderwicks (series) written by Jeanne Birdsall, narrated by Susan Denaker

Similarly to what I said with regards to Harry Potter, I think there’s something very comforting in returning to a childhood favorite in audiobook form. It’s very calming, and you already know the story so well that you won’t get confused if you drift off into thought for a second. I’ve read this series many, many times, so this is what listening to it is like.

Thoughts

I LOVE all of the audiobooks I’ve talked about, but I do think that for me personally, audiobooks can be a bit hit or miss. Listening to books sometimes makes it easier for me to get distracted, so an audiobook has to be really well done for me to have a good experience listening to it.

This definitely has to do with the type of book as well—there are some books that just don’t translate well into audiobook format.

All that being said, I would absolutely love to find some more audiobooks to fall in love with. There are so many reasons why I want to read more audiobooks: 1) I can read while cleaning, commuting, etc., 2) They can be really immersive and bring a story to life, 3) Switching up formats helps prevent confusion if I’m reading multiple books at once, and 4) It helps me read faster.

For those reasons, if any of you have any recommendations of really good audiobooks, I would LOVE to hear them in the comments!
